 – The Line of Control (LoC), which acts as the de facto border between India and Pakistan in the disputed Kashmir region, was breached by Pakistani military and terrorists, sparking the start of the war. 

By placing themselves in advantageous positions, the infiltrators were able to obtain a substantial tactical edge.

 Conflict and Operations:

– “Operation Vijay” was started by the Indian Army to remove the infiltrators. This mission featured fierce, high-altitude fighting, frequently in inclement weather and arid alpine terrain.

 – Precision bombing of enemy positions was part of “Operation Safed Sagar,” an operation carried out by the Indian Air Force (IAF) to support ground operations.

 Key Battles and Areas:

– Tololing, Tiger Hill, and Point 4875 (later dubbed Batra Top after the valiant Captain Vikram Batra) were a few of the crucial battlegrounds.

 – During the battle, a number of men and women, including Captain Vikram Batra, Lieutenant Manoj Kumar Pandey, Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav, and others, displayed great bravery for which they were posthumously awarded India’s highest military medals.

  Outcome:

-On July 26, 1999, the war came to an end when the Indian forces were able to retake the majority of the infiltrators’ strongholds. 

– With Pakistani forces withdrawing across the Line of Control and India recovering control of its territory, the conflict was formally declared over.

Wreath-Laying Ceremony: At the Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate in New Delhi, the Indian Prime Minister honors the fallen soldiers.
